Our favorite help desk providers Freshdesk (albeit we only use Freshdesk for transparent email support, as we have our own bbPress based forums and never want a corporate feel to our communications or our support) have just added phone support to their helpdesk. Here’s our experience setting up Foliovision with Freshfone.

What’s really cool:
- you can pick a number of your choice in many countries, including both our favorites, Canada and Slovakia.
- numbers are just $1/month and set up instantly. We snagged a great one +1 437 800 2180 with no extra fee for a memorisable number.
- you get round robin phone service on that number.
- you can send calls out
- there is dial out. So very cool. A step to getting Skype out of Foliovision.
- you can choose to record all calls automatically (saves a lot of IT trouble setting call recording up in individual computers).
What’s not cool:
- playback does not allow you to skip though the message (it’s real time only). This should be changed to a true media player.
- only your helpdesk staff (minimum $17/person/month) have access to phone calls. This is a deal breaker for us as we have a room full of people who need occasional outbound call service but do not need Freshdesk accounts. We might share an account among them.
- Call quality appears not to be very good. Like calling India. Or like crappy Skype landline service between Europe and North America.
- you can’t authorize Freshfone to use your microphone every time in Chromium. Each call needs a separate authorisation. There might be a better way for Freshfone to ask for permission to allow a permanent authorisation.
We’ve been wanting to get away from Skype for a few reasons:
- it’s spyware. Hosted in the US and owned by Microsoft, Skype is active spyware which is constantly hooked up to your webcam and microphone. Skype has root privileges on OS X. Skype is the worst security breach of one’s system possible, with full access to the internet at all times and root privileges, owned by a company who has historically shown absolutely no interest in its clients privacy and is an active partner of the US government in creating exploits for law enforcement and anyone else who happens to know about htem.
- the call quality sucks.
We’ve been looking around at SIP solutions but the best I could find is OnSip which is great value at $9/month for a fairly complete account but you need a minimum of five of them. I’m not really interested in adding another $50/month of overhead right now for telephone services which we use only a minimum (as an aside, Foliovision experience is that clients who want to talk on the telephone are the least organised and least willing to pay for your time and expertise). On top of that it would be impossible to include more people without expanding the account. When many people need only a few calls per month this is a nuisance.
If Freshdesk can improve Freshfone call quality and add an option for telephone agents, Freshfone could be a game changer.
Additional user workaround
Suggested workaround for the registered agents issue in the meantime:
- forward calls to non-agents cellphones (that way they will not need an account).
- have a shared Freshdesk personality for outbound calls (that same personality can be used for whoever is on incoming phone duty).
This is not ideal. There really should be an option for telephone agents at no cost. Freshdesk is already making money on the SIP (fairly good money it looks like) and there’s no reason to tie the phone service to the help desk.
Setting Freshfone up
This is fantastic. You just pick your number, agree to pay for it and you have a working telephone taking voice messages. The way Freshdesk manage to set you up immediately is by including intelligent defaults out of the box along with a computer generated voice. The voice is not the best but is a touch better than the Apple voices of the early 2000’s. Better than nothing and you can upload well recorded greetings later once you’ve got the system working properly. Much, much better than fighting for forty minutes to get recordings to even test the system. Better than automated single fit solutions: you can add your company name and detailed instructions so people do at least know who they called.

Whoever thinks Indians don’t understand UX now is in for a rude surprise. Indians have caught up. Like the Japanese did with cameras in the sixties, the Indians are moving ahead with better software solutions at better prices. It doesn’t do any good to complain about copy catting. There is little real innovation in this world, only better execution.
“We’ve always been shameless about stealing great ideas.” Steve Jobs, 1996.
Anyway congratulations to Freshdesk on making Freshfone so easy to set up straight out of the box. We’ll post any updates about call quality experience and/or a permanent solution to the agents issue. We’d love to hear your feedback on call quality and/or ways to get more out of Freshfone.
We’d like to see Freshfone become a full phone replacement system and be able to use it for all our voice communication.
Call quality update 25 April 2014
Having used Freshfone quite a bit in the last two weeks as Skype call quality has deteriorated still further to North America, most of the time it is really good. I’ve had success with Canada, France and the United States. Many of the Freshfone calls were actually better than landlines, like being their live. This was in back to back comparisons of struggling Skype (where my interlocutors would prefer not to speak at all than deal with the poor Skype call quality).
Where Freshfone has struggled has been to support lines to major Canadian banks for instance who are outsourcing their calls via VOIP to India. This is fairly ironic as Freshdesk is an Indian company themselves. What appears to happen is that the two VOIP lines just extend too far (there’s no smart routing, it all goes through an ISP in Montreal) across the Atlantic and back across Africa to India.
Give Freshfone a try for free and let me know about call quality.

Hi Alec,
This is Abishek from Freshdesk. Thanks for the review. It was a validation for a lot of things we were trying to achieve. There are a couple of clarifications though.
The player has a seeker. You can click on the circle surrounding the play/pause button to skip to any point in the call. We could work on this though.
If you have an account that is SSL enabled i.e. with https:// then you only need to authorize once.
Thanks for clearing these questions up.
For the seeker, it’s not at all obvious.
Thanks for the tip about SSL. I’ve enabled SSL for our account and presto, I can call again automatically. Very nice.
It would be great to have some kind of application outside of the web browser which allows us to Freshdesk and reroute the audio. Currently Freshdesk shares Chromium with my main music services. Flash is only enabled in Chromium so I can’t use any other browser for music players. Freshdesk is at its best in Chromium as well (Typinator works there and not in Safari).
A bit of a bind, albeit a sophisticated one. I’d love to have simple SIP access to Freshfone.
Hey Alec,
Great review! I was curious about the call quality when the helpdesk is outsourced. Does this mean:
It might be the architecture I am thinking about as a solution to our situation (we want to hadle helpdesk during business hours but have some sort of level 1 support during non-office hours, or if we don’t pick up the phone).
Hi Miguel,
Not sure about your question number three. Our helpdesk is us in Bratislava handling issues personally. We don’t outsource support. You get an expert every time with Foliovision.
Thanks Alec,
Point #3 was what I understood from “support lines to major Canadian banks for instance who are outsourcing their calls”.
In your case, does the team work 24/7 in Bratislava or do you only offer support during business hours? What happens when someone in Austrailia calls at 3 AM Bratislava time?
Hi Miguel,
We work our business hours but have telephone lines on sometimes outside of office hours. We are still mainly using telephone/Freshfone for outbound rather than incoming. We offer existing clients telephone support but are not particularly interested at this point in being a free answers desk for people “just thinking”. We are a boutique agency offering superlative support to fantastic clients and not interested in becoming a Walmart of web development or hosting.
