I’m also having iPad issues (iOS 8.1):
1) no play icon
2) slow video start, 3 dots flash for long time
3) full screen button and other controls are not visibleWorking perfect and none of the above issues with iPhone (iOS 8.1), also on PC.
iPad playback is fine with a competitor plugin “JW Player”, none of the 3 issues above.
ps my videos are self hosted (not youtube)

Hello Mark,
1) & 3) It appears that your FV WordPress Flowplayer install is not complete. Following files are missing:
/wp-content/plugins/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/play_white@x2.png
/wp-content/plugins/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/white@x2.png
/wp-content/plugins/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/flowplayer@2x.pngHowever these files are present in the plugin: http://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/trunk/css/img/
Did you uploaded the plugin by hand? If so, add the files by hand or re-install the plugin or install it using your wp-admin.
Or does your host block requests to files with @ in URL? It should not, as it’s a common naming practice for retina CSS images.
2) Slow video buffering – working on it.
Thanks,
MartinHi Martin
Many thanks for responding quickly and working on this.
I installed via wordpress (not manually) using my wp-admin login. Will try re-installing now.
FYI when I woke up and tested this morning, iPhone iOS 8.1 and also Safari and Chrome on my Mac all have the same problems now (these were fine last night). In the meantime I’ve reverted the “sample films” page to using the JW Player plugin. The last video at the bottom of the page has been left using FV Player for testing purposes, also if you click on any of the couples names and go into their individual page, these are all FV Player code at the moment.
Thanks
MarkHello Mark,
1) & 3) I’m noticing your jwPlayer has missing files too (whotube.xml).
2) Video speed issues – when on iPad, your jwPlayer uses the SD quality file: 10_08_13_SD.mp4 which is around 34MB
The FV Flowplayer uses: 10_08_13_HD.mp4 which is 64MB. I think that explains the speed difference.
Could you please let us know what configuration in jwPlayer do you use to achieve this? FV Flowplayer supports mobile video as well, but it’s served only to small screens, iPad always gets the main video. We support quality switching as well (in the Pro version).
Thanks,
MartinHi Martin
I re-installed the plugin and no change. The 3 files you listed appeared on the list of files confirmed when I deleted the plugin in WP:-
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/controller/frontend.php
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/controller/backend.php
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/controller/shortcodes.php
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/exit_btn.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/play_white@x2.png em
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/techinfo.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/black_rtl@x2.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/play_white_rtl@x2.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/flowplayer@2x.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/play_white_rtl.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/playful_black_rtl.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/uploader-icons.png
….
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/white_rtl@x2.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/white@x2.png
/fv-wordpress-flowplayer/css/img/play_black_rtl.png
…After re-installing the plugin, I checked the CSS folder via FTP and the 3 files are present.
Maybe CSS conflict, my wordpress site uses a customer wordpress theme “Prophoto” I also have some custom CSS and custom Javascript. I temporarily removed my custom CSS and Javascript which had no effect. May or may not be a clash with the Prophoto theme?
Thanks
MarkHi Martin
I’ve found the problem: A WP plugin called “All In One WP Security”. I use this to prevent WP hack attempts and works well. I have disabled temporarily and the play icons are appearing again. I maintain my own site, am not a web developer, so may be tricky troubleshooting the All in One setting which is causing the problem.
Yes, JW Player has an SD/HD toggle, I have the default set to play the HD file which works on flash browsers. On HTML 5 and iOS devices the smaller SD file may be served instead. The SD/HD toggle stopped working on iOS some time ago.
Something still not right with the iPad speed though. Currently on iPad the 3 dots are continually flashing for a very long time 5 minutes + and failing to play. Working better on iPhone and starts playing after around 10 seconds or so.
BTW the first time I tested on iOS device and noticed was slow last night, I initially had the site-wide defaults “auto buffering” ticked. After unticking last night it appeared to fix on iPhone. I have been toggling on and off other different default settings but not managed to nail whats causing the iPad issue. BTW updated last night from iOS 8.1 to 8.1.1 after my initial post here.
BTW WordPress did an auto-update yesterday to 4.0.1 and broke everyones site using JW Player. Thats why I quickly tried FV Player (was wanting to try it anyway) The JW developer quickly updated their plugin and working fine now but I’m still thinking of moving over the a commercial FV licence if all working on my site rather upgrading my JW5 to JW6.
Thanks
MarkHello Mark,
it’s possible that one of the issues confused your iPad so much, that it had to be restarted. I had similar issues with Firefox on PC, when I run two instances of it (Firefox and its clone Palemoon) playing video at the same time.
Thank you for the tip about how to fix compatibility with All In One WP Security!
Thanks,
MartinHi Martin
Very pleased to have made good progress!
On a separate note: I looked at your “quality switching” demo on your site on my ipad and iphone to see if switching works on iOS. You may already be aware of this, and probably iOS limitations, anyway here is some feedback FYI on the latest iOS:-
iPad iOS 8.1.1 – The 3 SD, HD & Mobile buttons appear, SD by default is highlighted and the video plays fine. However, pressing HD and Mobile has no effect, the SD video keeps playing.
iPhone iOS 8.1 – The 3 SD, HD & Mobile buttons appear, Mobile by default is highlighted if viewing the mobile version of your site. SD is highlighted if viewing the desktop version of your site. 3 dots flash indefinitely without the video starting regardless. Pressing one of the other 3 button works and starts to buffer video, waited till the buffer bar the end but video still doesnt start playing. Stays in pause mode.
Full screen implementation on iOS is different to other players. Usually Apple’s own video controls get activated when in full screen mode and there is a DONE button at the top to go back to the page. Also in recent iOS you can pinch zoom to go in and out of full screen. FV player on iPad doesnt react like this and doesnt fully take over the entire screen, the safari toolbar remains at the top. Maybe deliberate implementation for your share bar to be accessible. Its not that big a deal but thought I’d mention, wondering if this is something that could be looked into for a later update if it is feasible?
Full screen on iPhone activates the Apple video controls and proper full screen automatically which is good, thats what you want. So its just iPad thats not handled the usual Apple way.
Thanks
MarkHi Martin
I have been evaluating again and am coming across playback problems on iPad again, persistent 3 dots flashing and the video never starts playing. Same result with demo videos on your site as with my site. Other non FV players are working fine. The problem resolved only by powering down and hard resetting iPad. On reboot, playback started very quick.
OK, some more info for replicating the issue.
1) Load page: ‘http://my-site.com/home-page-test-2015/’ in safari on ipad. Video plays fine.
2) Refresh page to stop video playing
3) Push home button on the iPad to go to the apps screen
4) Open the Apple Videos app and start a video playing.
5) Return to Safari and play the video on the same page: ‘http://my-site.com/home-page-test-2015/’ video doesnt play, stays on the 3 dots flashingClosing the safari browser tab and opening a new tab to navigate again to ‘http://my-site.com/home-page-test-2015/’ works, the video starts playing. Also, closing Safari and then opening Safari again clears the problem too.
The behaviour is the same in Chrome on the iPad.
A JW and Vimeo player on the same page works fine.
I was looking to implement a new HTML 5 player due to jerky playback with my existing Flash JW player and I was at the checkout stage with FV yesterday, the poor exchange rate and VAT made me think twice and test more to identify issues before puling the trigger. Your support and regular updates is impressive but very sorry to say this guys, Vimeo Plus looks more attractive in terms of performance and annual cost.
Thanks
MarkHi Mark,
Thanks for the detailed notes on replicating the playback issue.
Vimeo Plus does not offer a player like this. I highly recommend Vimeo Plus or Vimeo Pro but they are both a lot better with FV Player Pro (which also allows you to have some ultrasecure videos on Amazon Cloudfront via RMTP at the SAME time you have most of your videos on Vimeo Plus).
Alas we are not responsible for exchange rates or VAT in the EU. Thanks for sharing your take though. If you have an EU business, you do not need to pay the VAT. Just enter your business number.
Cordial regards,
Alec
Hello Mark,
we were able to replicate the behavior by following the steps you posted. We found where the video playback stalls after the iPad Video app is used.
A safety check which retries the video playback in such case was put into the latest development version of FV Flowplayer. Please let us know if you still get the issue with the video on our homepage: https://foliovision.com
Thanks,
Martin
